WORKING DOGS FOR VETS

LAWRENCEBURG, Tennessee

Working Dogs For Vets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming lives by pairing medically prescribed service dogs with disabled veterans in need. Our mission is to empower these heroes as they transition back to civilian life, offering them renewed independence, purpose, and hope. Through comprehensive training and lifelong support, we help veterans reclaim their health, dignity, and connection to community — while also saving the lives of shelter dogs who are given a second chance to serve. We believe that every veteran deserves access to the tools that support their healing. Service dogs are not pets — they are assistive medical devices trained to mitigate symptoms of PTSD, mobility impairments, traumatic brain injuries, and diabetic conditions. These dogs perform life-saving tasks such as interrupting panic attacks, retrieving medication, alerting to blood sugar changes, and providing physical stability. By reducing reliance on emergency services and improving daily functioning, our program helps veterans avoid institutionalization, homelessness, and suicide. Our model is built on compassion, efficiency, and sustainability. We operate with one of the lowest cost-per-placement rates in the country, thanks to our hands-on training approach, volunteer network, and strategic partnerships. We do not charge veterans for their dogs or training. Instead, we rely on community support, corporate giving, and grassroots fundraising to keep our services accessible and scalable. In addition to serving veterans, our program addresses the crisis of overcrowded animal shelters. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs who are temperament-tested and medically screened, giving them a meaningful role and a loving home. This dual-impact approach — saving lives on both ends of the leash — is at the heart of our mission. Working Dogs For Vets currently serves veterans across Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and expanding regions including Kentucky, Ohio, Colorado, and the Carolinas. We are actively building outreach in Connecticut and National Forest areas to reach underserved populations. Our team includes certified trainers, medical advisors, and veteran mentors who guide each participant through a personalized journey of healing and empowerment. We invite partners like Costco and Benevity to join us in honoring those who’ve served by supporting the training, medical care, and certification of service dogs. Every contribution helps us place more dogs, save more lives, and build stronger communities. Together, we can reduce veteran suicide, alleviate shelter overcrowding, and Save lives at both ends of the leash.
