CONNECT TO THE PROBLEM
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), hundreds of thousands of veterans continue to receive care for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) each year. Recent estimates suggest that 11–20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom experience PTSD in a given year. Additionally, the VA reports that more than 500,000 veterans are actively receiving treatment for PTSD annually, reflecting the ongoing and significant need for mental health support.
Beyond PTSD, many veterans also face traumatic brain injury (TBI), military sexual trauma (MST), and other service-related conditions that can make reintegration into civilian life incredibly challenging. Compounding this issue, veteran suicide remains a critical concern, with the VA estimating an average of approximately 17 veteran suicides per day in the United States.
Despite growing clinical research and compelling anecdotal evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of service dogs in mitigating symptoms of PTSD and related conditions, service dogs are not consistently covered by insurance or government programs, leaving many veterans without access to this life-changing resource.
CONNECT TO THE SOLUTION
Injured U.S. military veterans understand the suffering, isolation, and challenges associated with PTSD, TBI, MST, and other invisible wounds of service. Believet is dedicated to helping veterans overcome these barriers, empowering them to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives.
We carefully select and rescue exceptional dogs, training them to serve in an extraordinary role—as a comprehensive support system for veterans. These highly trained service dogs provide physical, emotional, and psychological support, helping to interrupt anxiety, create a sense of safety, and restore confidence in everyday life.
A service dog offers more than companionship—it provides greater independence, improved quality of life, and renewed peace of mind. For many veterans, these dogs help bridge the gap between isolation and connection. While it can be difficult for others to fully understand a veteran’s lived experiences, a service dog offers consistent, nonjudgmental support, helping to rebuild trust and emotional stability.
Research and experience show that service dogs can help reduce symptoms of PTSD, decrease reliance on medications, and lower feelings of loneliness and despair—all of which contribute to reducing suicide risk and improving long-term outcomes.
