Walkin’ In My Shoes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization founded in 2005 in response to the increasing issue of underserved street homeless in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Walkin’ In My Shoes established the Survival Backpack Street Outreach Program to provide information about prevention services that will link the homeless with immediate emergency shelter assistance and to secure adequate placement within 24 hours. This was done in an effort to reduce the number of homeless youth, women and children on the streets of Kenosha who were at risk of being sexually abused, at risk of being exploited, or at risk of being involvement in criminal activity to meet their basic needs.
Our goals and objectives are to:
1). Provide immediate emergency housing for homeless high school students until they graduate high school, and move on to college. We hope to eliminate any worries young teens may have of where they would live while going to school.
2.) Move people beyond shelter into permanent housing for those who have been living a life on the streets of Kenosha.
3.) Create opportunities to help people rise above poverty by removing the stigma of "Poor" impoverish mindsets and give people the necessary tools for the betterment of others and sustain themselves without relying on governmental assistance programs to meet their basic needs.
4.) Expand our Caden' Kitchen cooking Program. to teach both the parent and child; how to cook homemade nutritional meals grown locally from our Seed to Harvest Community Garden. With the focus of keeping a hot meal on the dinner table 7 days a week. Help end childhood hunger, childhood obesity, food allergy, food waste, juvenile diabetes, food allergy, food budgeting and so much more. This effort would benefit homeless and low to modern low-income individuals and families in Kenosha.
5.) The Bunker's Coffeehouse for VETS Program provides a "Safe Space" exclusively for retired veterans, military active duty personnel, their families and veterans experiencing homelessness to have a place to be in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The coffeehouse operates every Thursday from 9am to 1pm with a continental breakfast and lunch. Plus perishable and nonperishable food items, personal hygiene, clothing, and community resources of VA services available and referrals to the local VA for housing and much more.
