Important works can disappear from public view even when they illuminate a significant period of cultural history. Echoes of Empires brings neglected vocal music back into the concert hall through carefully researched performances, accessible presentation, and educational context.
The project’s first focus is Granville Bantock’s Sappho: Prelude and Nine Fragments. Composed in 1906 for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, the cycle sets English translations of Sappho’s poetry prepared by Bantock’s wife, Helena F. Bantock. Its combination of ancient poetry, late-Romantic musical language, and intimate psychological expression offers audiences a distinctive encounter with both classical literature and the British musical renaissance.
Although Bantock was an influential British composer and conductor, much of his vocal music is now rarely performed. A piano-vocal score published in 2024 provides a new opportunity to present Sappho in an intimate voice-and-piano format and introduce the work to contemporary audiences.
Living Opera will develop live performances in selected North American cities, supported by program notes and educational materials explaining the work’s literary, musical, and historical context. Where permissions allow, filmed excerpts will extend access beyond the concert hall.
