ECHOES of EMPIRES: Support the reimagination of a neglected voice of the British musical renaissance
/ Living Opera FoundationThrough the annals of time, many figures and events fade away from memory. Opportunities to reignite the knowledge and awareness of those from the past, sheds new perspective and interest. Living Opera invites your support to bring the work of Granville Bantock, a central yet neglected voice of the British musical renaissance, into view through live performance in a selected city / cities*.
Influenced by Wagner and Strauss, Bantock drew on classical literature and myth, though much of his music faded from view after his death. In 1906 he composed, The 9 Fragments of Sappho which sets Sappho’s poetry in English after the Greek. The only surviving source, a piano-vocal score recently published in 2024, creates a rare opportunity to reimagine the work for voice and piano, revealing its intimacy and expressive depth.
Living Opera revives Bantock’s legacy with Echoes of Empires, an accessible form, bringing his music to new audiences while preserving an important strand of early twentieth music history.
If you are an enthusiast of classical literature, myth and music, this is your opportunity to shape the visibility of a key British opera figure, well into the future.
