using theatre and storytelling. VSP exists to bridge the civilian and military gaps within our communities by deepening the understanding of what military families endure during frequent moves, extended trainings, and deployments. VSP has created three programs in support of veterans’ spouses:
-Theatrical Programs: I Will Wait is a poignant, full-length theatrical production that shares the U.S. military spouse perspective of over 100 years of fighting wars. Its creation is also VSP’s origin story! “Heart to Script” is our monologue-writing workshop led by VSP founder & playwright, Amy Uptgraft. Military spouse stories written in this life-changing workshop inspire theatrical works like in*BETWEEN – a staged play reading seen on Knoxville and New York stages – and a new full-length play currently in production!
-Healing Through Creativity: Healing through Creativity is where community happens. This program hosts creative arts and writing workshops that support the military spouse in mind and spirit. Military spouses can find resources to care for their service members & families. What they can’t often find is a safe space in which to explore who they are, journey through their experiences, and bond with those who understand. That’s our community.
-Stories We Tell: Stories We Tell is our verbal “gallery walk” to help the world connect with military spouse voices. This program houses short, documentary-style videos through our YouTube channel and written stories via our VSP blog. These stories are captured through direct interviews or writing submissions and help illuminate both the diversity of identities within the military spouse community, along with the common experience that binds us together.
