The Veteran's Spouse Project (VSP) is the only nonprofit, 501(c)3, arts
organization in the nation working to give voice to the experiences of military spouses
using theater, creative arts, and storytelling. VSP exists to bridge the civilian and military gaps within our communities by deepening the understanding of what military families endure during frequent moves, extended trainings, and deployments. VSP has created three programs in support of veterans’ spouses:
-I Will Wait: Using actual spouses’ experiences, I Will Wait weaves these stories
together through a theatrical production. The story begins in 1945 at the end of
World War II and travels through “forgotten” Korea, the volatile Vietnam era,
Desert Storm, and ends with spouses caught in the current cycle of war and
deployment. With almost 70% of military families living off-installation, they are
increasingly reliant on their local communities for support and resources thatmeet their needs. It is imperative that the community has an understanding of the
experiences of military spouses.
-Healing Through Creativity: Our workshops are centered around storytelling and community. Spouses come together and share their experiences within the military lifestyle through a variety of creative workshops, including monologue writing, poetry, book clubs, and so much more! VSP has turned to a virtual platform, creating an online
community of support and shared storytelling for spouses.
-Stories We Tell: This program’s mission is to preserve the stories of America’s
military spouses and families across generations. Through various mediums, this
collection documents and archives these narratives, giving a voice to people who
are irrevocably changed when their loved ones raise their right hands in service
to our great nation.
