VIRGINIA HUNTERS WHO CARE INC

Our charity encourages hunters to donate deer at participating processing locations through our Hunters for the Hungry program.. We raise funds to pay professional meat cutters to prepare the meat for distribution. It is cut, wrapped and frozen and then given to local feeding programs. We have provided over 28.8 million servings of venison since our program began in 1991.

Venison is low in fat and rich in protein. Doctors recommend venison to their patients with heart disease or diabetes because of its healthful benefits. It provides amino acids which are essential to brain development in children and to maintaining health in adults.

The venison is provided at no cost to local feeding programs helping their limited budgets to go further. Deer are an abundant and renewable natural resource. Our costs for processing currently are $1.25 cents per pound or 31.25 cents per quarter pound serving. A mature large bodied deer will yield 40 pounds of quality lean meat enough venison for 160 quarter pound servings at a processing cost of just $50.00. When compared to similar cuts of beef running between $5.00 and $20.00 per pound.
