We purchase books, underwrite online access to ebooks, music and video, provide educational and entertainment programs, and contribute to a number of community based services provided by the library. Including:
Addressing Homelessness: The Social Worker in the Library can assist with temporary or long term housing, network clients with local job placement, provide emergency bus passes or other transportation support, and help with food insecurity.
Empowering Youth: The library pairs traditional story time programs with innovative, virtual emergent literacy skills that use technology as learning tools. The library supports direct education through Homeschool Huddle programs as well as after-school S.T.R.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, Math) programs that focus on creative and critical thinking skills while employing 3D printing, coding, virtual reality, robotics, drones, etc., to further education and future job skills.
Environmental Stewardship: We host seed lending libraries, host displays and presentations by local Herb Societies and Master Gardeners, Marine Science Center, Lyonia Environmental Center and other local agencies to encourage alternate energy, recycling and disuse of pesticides and fertilizers.
Hunger Relief: We are a host site for Summer Food for children up to age 18, serving two meals a day during summer school recess. As well, the Social Worker in the Library programs networks with local agencies to circumvent food scarcity, helps families apply for SNAP or other food-related services. And the Recipes and Reads Culinary Lab educates community members on how to handle food, read recipes, find food through alterntive venues, shop on a budget and stretch meals.
Uplifting Families: Children's and Family programs are offered free on a daily basis, with the library van traveling into underserved or remote communities. Programs include emergent literacy skills, and also educationally-based classes for homeschoolers and STREAM-based programs to introduce technology and job skills to families. The library also provides language learning software and classes for those to whom English is a second language, partners with job placement services, hosts resume writing programs, holds virtual High School classes for adults, networks with veteran services, supports and hosts elections, and serves as a vital information and communication source during emergencies such as hurricanes or the recent pandemic.
...And much more!
