Neighbor Ride’s mission is to enhance the health and quality of life for Howard County’s seniors by providing affordable, volunteer-based supplemental transportation. The program’s development was prompted by a 2001 Office on Aging study identifying transportation as the greatest unmet need facing the county’s rapidly growing senior population. The Office presented its findings to Transportation Advocates, urging members to find a solution. Neighbor Ride’s model was developed over 3 years, borrowing best practices from programs across the country and matching them to local needs and resources.
For over 20 years, Neighbor Ride has provided door-to-door transportation for Howard County seniors aged 60 and older. In fiscal year 2025, Neighbor Ride provided 17,748 trips (or 9,320 round-trip rides), of which 52.8% of client trips were for medical visits, 11.3 % shopping, 9.3% social, 7.5% exercise, 6.9% personal, 5.1 % religious services, 3.6% work, and 3.6 % volunteer/education.
