Project Feed Texas: Help Feed At Risk Youth & Families

por UVALDE FOUNDATION FOR KIDS

Extended Project Description: Feed Texas Project
Context: The 2025 Texas SNAP Crisis

As we navigate the end of 2025, Texas families are facing an unprecedented food security crisis. Following federal policy shifts and the implementation of stricter work requirements under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," SNAP regulations have reached their most stringent levels in decades. New mandates now require parents and able-bodied adults to document 80 hours of monthly training or work, while critical exemptions for vulnerable groups—including veterans and youth aging out of foster care—have been removed. These systemic barriers have left over 3.5 million Texans, including 1.7 million children, facing a widening "hunger gap" as benefits fail to keep pace with rising costs.

Project Overview: Feed Texas
The Feed Texas Project, an initiative of The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, serves as a frontline response to this crisis. We recognize that food insecurity is a precursor to community instability and personal trauma. Our project is designed to provide a consistent, comprehensive, and dignified lifeline to low-income families and at-risk youth who have been marginalized by these recent policy changes.

Core Operations & Impact
Utilizing an agile network of partner agencies and mobile food pantries, Feed Texas ensures that zip code does not determine a child’s access to nutrition.

* Nutritional Diversification: We supplement household budgets with a mix of fresh produce, proteins, and shelf-stable goods, prioritizing health-conscious options that are often the first to be cut during benefit reductions.
* Street Outreach: Our specialized teams conduct direct outreach to reach the "unseen" hungry—specifically youth and families in transitional housing who may no longer qualify for federal aid.
* Immediate Relief: In direct response to the 2025 benefit delays, we have distributed thousands of emergency H-E-B gift cards to families in high-need areas, restoring dignity by allowing parents to shop for their children’s specific needs.

24-Hour Crisis Support: The Anchorpoint Centers
Central to our mission is the Anchorpoint Program. We understand that hunger rarely exists in a vacuum; it is often tied to housing instability and domestic crisis.

* Always-On Assistance: Through our Anchorpoint centers, we provide 24-hour emergency aide for youth experiencing acute crises.
* Trauma-Informed Sanctuary: These centers offer more than just food; they provide immediate, temporary safe housing and comprehensive support for minors facing violence, abuse, or sudden homelessness.
* The Hub: Our Central Texas residency chapter in Temple serves as a scalable model for this work, offering a stable, centralized resource where youth can find safety and mentorship.

A Call for Commitment
The Feed Texas Project is a proven model for community resilience. However, to sustain this vital bridge for Texas families, we are not seeking temporary funding fixes. We demand a sustained political commitment to implement and scale these nutrition and intervention models. Our goal is to ensure that no child in Texas goes hungry while their family navigates a shifting legislative landscape.
