LATIMER LUTHERAN CHURCH PRESERVATION SOCIETY

The Latimer Lutheran Church Preservation Society is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to preserving this historical church. This building, a series 800 WWI Regimental Chapel, was constructed in 1942 at the Herington Army Air Field, then after WWII ended, was moved to Latimer in 1946 to serve as a Lutheran church. The church officially closed in December 2021. Because this building is very intact example of a WWII Regimental Chapel, it was listed on the State of Kansas Register of Historic Places in November 2023 and on the National Register of Historic Places in January of 2024. It has significance due to its architecture. In addition, this chapel is associated with a person of significance, Father Emil Kapaun, proposed for sainthood by the Catholic Church, who found his inspiration there in 1943 while serving as an auxiliary Chaplin.
Goals of the organization include restoring the original windows, trim, siding, repainting the exterior, and restoring the front entry steps.
