STUHR MUSEUM FOUNDATION

Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer opened in 1967 with a mission to preserve and portray the inspiring era of pioneer town builders who created the first communities in Nebraska. Stuhr Museum is unique in that it was voted into existence by the governing body for Hall County in 1965. The mission of the museum is accomplished through a unique living history experience that encourages visitors to explore the expansive 208-acre campus, where they can tangibly experience many of the 300,000+ artifacts housed in our 107 historic and modern buildings while interacting with period-costumed historical interpreters. The center point of the campus houses the Gem of the Prairie, a mid-century modern masterpiece designed by Edward Durell Stone that provides 1.5 floors of exhibit space.

Stuhr Museum, located in Grand Island, Nebraska welcomes more than 30,000 visitors annually, and 13,000 Nebraska elementary schoolchildren who attend Structured Field Trips or Summer School programs. In 2020, the Stuhr Museum Education Department launched the Virtual educational program that will be offered to schools throughout the state and across the country who are unable to attend in-person programs.

In addition to the living history experiences and educational programs, Stuhr Museum hosts cultural and community events including, but not limited to, Wings Over the Platte Sales & Exhibition art show, Independence Day celebrations, Veteran appreciation events, All Hallows Eve for Halloween, and Christmas Past & Present, including ever-expanding virtual offerings.
