It is also a time when we realize more than ever, that we are all connected. What happens to one of us, happens to all of us. As we wrestle with our own difficult feelings around this experience, we reach deeper for the courage to express compassion, empathy, and a willingness to help our fellow human and animal community members.
One Heart Wild was built on this premise and strives to practice mutual benefit within our relationships with nature, nonhuman animals, and the humans we serve. We are the safety net for animals, and humans, in need and we expect that need to increase greatly as a result of the social, emotional, and economic hardships that are befalling our nation and our communities.
This year One Heart Wild turned 6 years old - a very exciting milestone. An accomplishment we planned to celebrate with our community, as we committed to taking the next big step in our strategic plan growth. However, with COVID, we are holding steady where we are. We need to maintain the care we provide for over 70 animals, and three part time staff. The Sanctuary, and our ability to be of service to the animals, students, youth, adults, and volunteers, who are going to need us as we come out of this pandemic, depend on our ability to still be here when the dust settles. One Heart Wild Serves Our Region In Many Ways:
• Continual care for 70+ resident animals who have been transferred by local animal rescue organizations
• 7189 volunteer hours dedicated to care of animal residents, and support of students
• 630 individual Animal Assisted Therapeutic sessions provided (mostly to disadvantaged youth) - we are currently recieving over 15 calls a month for new clients seeking therapeutic support.
• Provided Sanctuary for 8 months, including 2 neuters, to a chinchilla family (mom, dad, son) whose human was homeless and healing substance abuse. Human and Chins are happily reunited, with a home and job.
• Provided temporary placement and emergency vet care for a lost Sun Conure whose family was eventually found.
• Accepted transfer of 17 new animal residents due to seizures from cock fighting ring, puppy mill, abandonment and abuse, age and medical issues
• 10 animal residents were laid to rest
• 115 people came to tour One Heart Wild
• Provided group services to youth from Kitsap Mental Health, Discovery High School, Explorer School, Open Doors School, Renaissance High School (serving 250 youth)
• Collaborated with Scarlet Road, Barker Creek Community School, Renaissance High School, Open Doors School, Renaissance High School, Carl Gibson Senior Center in Everett
• Provided student internships for: Olympic Education Service District's - Pathways To Success, University of Washington Tacoma - Behavioral Health, Moody Bible Institute - Division of Counseling & Education, University of WA – Social Work, Western Washington University – Behavioral Health
• Provided ROOTS Institute training to therapists and educators in the US and in England
