Tara Homes Foundation is a family-based organization founded on the belief that purposeful housing can drive meaningful change toward a more equitable and compassionate tomorrow. In a developed nation, securing basic physiological needs, including a safe place to sleep, should be a given. However, many communities struggle to rebuild their lives due to a lack of secure and affordable housing.

Our mission is to provide clean, sober homes in vibrant communities for individuals recovering from substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health issues, with a vision to expand our services to other communities facing housing instability. Inspired by personal experiences, Tara Homes is a tribute to underserved communities who lost their lives due to a lack of proper environment and support for their recovery.

The need for intervention is urgent, with the number of individuals battling SUD and drug overdose deaths on the rise. In 2022, 46.8 million Americans suffered from SUD, with 107,000 drug overdose deaths—70% of which were opioid-related. Despite the high demand, only 13% of those with SUD seek treatment, and relapse rates are significant, with 40-60% relapsing and 85% relapsing within the first year. These statistics highlight the critical need for safe, supportive environments during the early post-treatment phase.

Connecticut’s drug overdose death rate is alarmingly higher than the national average, increasing from 11.2 to 42.3 per 100,000 between 2011 and 2021. Tara Homes is dedicated to serving the recovery community in Connecticut by offering the following:

Strategic Location: Our homes are strategically situated near public transportation, ensuring residents have easy access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities—key elements for successful reintegration into society.

Comprehensive Support Services: We provide a holistic approach to recovery with services like individualized case management, life skills training, and employment assistance, promoting long-term recovery.

Community Integration: We believe in the transformative power of human connection in treating addiction. By fostering connections through volunteer opportunities, partnerships with local businesses, and community events, we help residents build a sense of belonging and purpose.

Level II Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) Certified Homes: We adhere to the highest standards of care, following the principles of the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR). We aim to achieve MAT Level II certification for our facilities, supporting sustained recovery and reducing relapse rates.

Tracking Success and Building a Supportive Alumni Network: Our responsibility extends beyond our homes. By tracking individuals’ progress after they leave, we gain insights into our program’s long-term effectiveness. This ongoing connection fosters a strong alumni network that offers peer mentorship, shares success stories, and strengthens the sober house community.
