Midtown Family Services is a San Jose–based nonprofit, established in 2014, dedicated to helping individuals and families move from crisis to stability and long-term self-sufficiency. We serve people facing housing instability, unemployment, financial hardship, and other barriers that threaten family well-being. Our work is grounded in the belief that lasting change happens when people are supported not only in meeting urgent needs, but also in building the skills, resources, and confidence to thrive.
At Midtown, we take a whole-person approach to service. Every client’s journey begins with a comprehensive assessment and individualized case plan designed to identify both immediate challenges and longer-term opportunities. Our work is structured around the Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix, an evidence-informed framework that helps us understand stability across 18 key life domains: housing, employment, income, food, childcare, children’s education, adult education, health care, life skills, family and social relationships, mobility, community involvement, parenting skills, legal issues, mental health, substance use, safety, and disabilities.
Because no two households face the same path forward, we go beyond a single assessment tool to better understand each client’s needs and strengths. We supplement the Self-Sufficiency Matrix with practical tools such as the O*NET Work Interest Profiler and occupational crosswalks, resume-building resources, budgeting tools, ChexSystems Consumer Behavior Reports, TransUnion Credit Reports, and other targeted supports. These tools give our staff a deeper view into the core domains of income, employment, and housing, helping us tailor services that are realistic, strategic, and responsive to each client’s circumstances.
This approach allows Midtown Family Services to do more than respond to crisis. We help clients secure and maintain housing, strengthen financial capability, prepare for and obtain employment, navigate legal and social service systems, and build the foundation for long-term independence. We also measure progress over time, evaluating both individual growth and overall program success through increases in self-sufficiency across all 18 domains. This means we are able to track meaningful outcomes, refine our services, and ensure that our work is making a measurable difference.
For donors and volunteers, this matters because your support fuels solutions that are both compassionate and accountable. Midtown Family Services combines relationship-based care with evidence-based practice, ensuring that every family we serve receives personalized support and every dollar or volunteer hour invested helps create measurable progress. When you support Midtown, you are investing in stronger families, greater stability, and a more resilient community.
At its heart, Midtown Family Services exists to help people build a future beyond crisis — one defined by stability, dignity, and opportunity.
