HONOR FLIGHT - TOP OF VIRGINIA

We have found that so many of our most senior veterans truly feel forgotten. Many are isolated, either at home or in a nursing home and feel cutoff from society because of their age and health. Many have never spoken of the horrors they experienced in combat over 70 years ago. The Honor Flight experience is unique in several ways. From the moment the veteran’s application is received, they are treated like a hero. When they arrive at the departure location, they are greeted with a hug and thanked for their service. They are outfitted with an Honor Flight shirt and treated to breakfast. Every veteran is paired with a guardian for the day. The guardian ensures the veteran’s safety, and takes pictures of the veteran throughout the day to commemorate the experience. A wheelchair is available for every veteran to ensure their safety. At each location (the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery) the veterans are treated as heroes and receive the recognition that they deserve. The veterans often can’t understand why total strangers are shaking their hand – it is an overwhelming experience for the veterans to receive the “thank you” that they never received when they returned from war 70 years ago.
