The Crisis
Our Warriors and their families are suffering from physical pain, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and sleep disorders. Narcotic usage is high in our veteran population due to the interconnectedness of injuries and the limitations of care available to our veterans. The connection between opioid use and the suicide rate has been established and the VA is seeking care options with lower morbidity risk. Extensive use of pain medications can cause dependency and contraindications, including death. As service members transition out of the military and into the civilian sector, high attrition rates among veterans and employers limited on the resources available to help their veteran employees reintegrate into the civilian workforce, affects restoration of quality of life for the veteran.
Our younger veterans who want to use their GI bill to complete their college education, are sometimes hindered by the impacts of traumatic brain injuries, and medications, as they try to focus on their studies.
The Solution
To decrease the number of suicides among our service members, Healing Warriors Program is using a four-pillared approach. Pillar 1 represents resourcing to adjunct needs including food, housing and employment. Pillar 2 is strengthening access and delivery of care, corresponding to free care for factors contributing to service member suicides. Pillar 3 is promoting connectedness which includes the family unit in the support services and connecting veterans with community activities with nonprofit and agency partners such as animal therapy, outdoor activities and adaptive sports, Pillar 4 is the provision of coping tools in the form of health and wellness toolkits which include gun locks, guided imagery pre-loaded headsets (mental health), and other comfort care supplies to alleviate pain and improve quality of life.
Our Results
Data collected from our clients pre and post treatments show an average of over 50% improvement in pain and anxiety metrics.
