With just a few thousand dollars, they opened a mental health clinic in the basement of the Jefferson County Courthouse. This was an innovative venture in a world where 75% of those diagnosed with a mental illness were sent to hospitals, and those remaining were kept in their homes as embarrassing family secrets.
Since its humble beginnings, Jefferson Center has grown to nearly 700 employees and has expanded the variety of programs offered. Services are now provided at over 23 clinics, 40 schools, and in nursing homes, senior centers, primary care offices, and other community locations.
