We can stop veteran suicide! Heroes to Heroes has found that, building communities, family, faith, and a lifetime of support, helps our veterans return home. We recognize that suicidal ideation does not stop after the crisis. Our program gives our veterans time to heal, time build strength, time to learn to enjoy life.
Through our lifetime of healing program, veterans start by finding a sense of belonging through support teams of their peers. Their first year on the program, they bond with team members through an online program focused on reconnecting with their sense of self, both emotionally and spiritually. To kick off year two, Heroes to Heroes participants, take a journey of discovery to Israel, the Holy Land, to experience their faith where it all began. As of November 2019, over 300 veterans have taken this life-saving and life-affirming journey where they are able to reconnect with their Creator and find peace and forgiveness.
Heroes to Heroes adds 100 veterans per year to our program. With over 600 veterans on our waiting list, your help is needed.
Harrison had enough. Due to his experience in Iraq he had a rough time dealing with his family. He and his wife split and his children wanted nothing to do with him. On the morning of August 10, 2012, Harrison's children told him they didn't want to see him anymore. He dropped them off at school for what he assumed was the last time. He then went to a medical appointment at the VA and was given more drugs. Harrison was tired of the spaced out feeling of the drugs.
Harrison returned home, took his entire prescription with a bottle of whiskey, and wrote a note to his children. In that note, he explained that their lives would be better without him. He then held his loaded weapon to his head and asked God one question, "If you want me to live, please show me a sign."
At that moment, his telephone rang. He was shocked into sobriety when he realized he was being asked to join a journey to the Holy Land by two gentlemen from Heroes to Heroes. Harrison immediately went to the Heroes to Heroes website to make sure this was real. Weeks later he found himself in Jerusalem. Today Harrison works as Program Manager for Heroes to Heroes.
