Equine-assisted services are a proven beneficial exercise for people with a variety of physical concerns. The gentle and rhythmic motion of a horse's walking gait increases the rider's core muscle strength while improving coordination, balance, and flexibility. The special bond or relationship formed with a horse can lead to increased self-confidence, enhanced self-esteem, improved decision-making skills, personal insight, a sense of achievement, and social skills that can include increased patience.
The Equine-Assisted Services Program serves riders from 4 years old and up who weigh less than 175 pounds. There are 3 seven week sessions per year (Spring, Summer, and Fall), with classes held Mondays through Thursdays. The riding season begins in May and goes through the end of October. We have a winter class in our indoor arena in January - March, which is weather-dependent.
The Heroes on Horseback (Veteran's Program) offers equine-assisted services free of charge to veterans in rehabilitation and injured active-duty military personnel who have sustained a wide variety of physical injuries and/or psychological trauma. The riding season begins in May and goes through the end of October.
The program horses are specially chosen and trained for adaptive riding. They must be patient, intelligent, hardworking, versatile, and confident. They are tolerant of noises and sudden movements yet are responsive to the instructions of more advanced riders,
The Equine-Assisted Services Program and Heroes on Horseback are blessed with dedicated volunteers, and there is always room for more. Each rider can require up to three volunteers to assist them with their lesson. Volunteer training is offered before each session and throughout the season. Horse experience is not required for volunteering, just the ability to walk for an hour at a time and a willingness to work with our fantastic riders and horses. Volunteers are also needed for special projects and events.
