Helios Recovery is The Helianthus Project’s trauma-informed survivor support program serving individuals impacted by human trafficking and exploitation in Beaufort County and the surrounding Lowcountry. The program helps survivors move from immediate crisis toward safety, healing, independence, and long-term stability through individualized support, advocacy, and coordinated access to essential services.
Each participant enters the program with different experiences, needs, and goals. Helios Recovery begins with a confidential assessment to identify urgent concerns, safety risks, barriers to stability, and survivor-defined priorities. An individualized service plan is then developed to help address immediate needs while creating a realistic pathway toward long-term recovery.
Depending on the survivor’s circumstances, assistance may include emergency shelter, transportation, food, clothing, hygiene products, replacement identification documents, safety planning, counseling referrals, healthcare connections, and other essential resources. The program also provides ongoing advocacy, case management, follow-up support, and referrals to trusted partners offering housing, employment, education, legal advocacy, and specialized care.
Helios Recovery is designed to reduce the practical barriers that often prevent survivors from accessing help or maintaining stability. Transportation limitations, housing insecurity, financial hardship, untreated trauma, social isolation, and difficulty navigating multiple service systems can place survivors at greater risk of continued exploitation. By coordinating resources and providing consistent support, the program helps survivors make informed decisions and progress toward goals at their own pace.
Survivor privacy, choice, dignity, and autonomy are central to every aspect of the program. Participation is voluntary, and services are delivered without judgment or a one-size-fits-all definition of recovery. Helios Recovery recognizes that healing is not linear and that success may look different for every individual.
The program also strengthens community collaboration by working with counselors, healthcare providers, housing organizations, law enforcement, schools, social-service agencies, and other trusted partners. This coordinated approach reduces service gaps, improves referrals, and helps ensure that survivors receive appropriate support beyond the scope of any single organization.
Program success is measured through confidential intake and follow-up assessments, individualized service plans, case-management records, referral completion, survivor feedback, and progress toward survivor-defined goals. Key indicators include the number of survivors served, urgent needs addressed, connections to essential services, improvements in safety and stability, and identified unmet needs. All reporting information is aggregated and de-identified to protect survivor privacy.
