HELIANTHUS PROJECT

The Helianthus Project is a Latina- and Veteran-founded nonprofit organization based in Beaufort, South Carolina, dedicated to supporting individuals impacted by human trafficking, exploitation, and crisis throughout the Lowcountry. Our mission is to help survivors move from crisis toward safety, healing, independence, and long-term stability through trauma-informed care, advocacy, education, and community collaboration.
Through our Helios Recovery Program, we provide individualized assistance based on each survivor’s unique circumstances, needs, and goals. Support may include crisis response, emergency shelter, transportation, food, clothing, hygiene products, replacement identification documents, counseling referrals, healthcare connections, safety planning, and access to other essential resources. We also provide ongoing advocacy, case management, and referrals to trusted community partners that can assist with housing, employment, education, legal advocacy, and other needs affecting recovery and self-sufficiency.
The path forward after trafficking is rarely simple. Survivors may face barriers such as unstable housing, limited transportation, financial hardship, untreated trauma, isolation, and difficulty navigating complex service systems. The Helianthus Project works alongside each individual to reduce these barriers while honoring their privacy, choices, dignity, and autonomy. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, we help survivors create individualized recovery plans centered on their own priorities and definitions of success.
In addition to direct survivor support, The Helianthus Project provides prevention education and community outreach designed to increase awareness of human trafficking, strengthen early identification, and improve the community’s response to exploitation. We work to equip schools, service providers, community organizations, and residents with practical information about trafficking indicators, vulnerabilities, available resources, and appropriate ways to respond when someone may need help.
Collaboration is central to our work because no single organization can address every challenge a survivor may experience. We build relationships with counselors, healthcare providers, housing organizations, law enforcement, schools, social-service agencies, and other community partners to create a stronger and more coordinated network of care. These partnerships help reduce gaps and duplication while connecting survivors with specialized services beyond our organization’s scope.
The Helianthus Project relies on charitable contributions, grants, partnerships, and community support to carry out its mission. Donations directly strengthen our ability to respond when survivors seek help, provide essential resources during moments of crisis, expand the Helios Recovery Program, and deliver prevention education throughout Beaufort County and the surrounding Lowcountry.
Our vision is a community in which survivors are believed, supported, and empowered- and where individuals, families, schools, and service providers have the knowledge and resources needed to prevent exploitation. Through compassionate support and coordinated action, The Helianthus Project helps survivors reclaim safety, dignity, autonomy, and hope while building foundations for stable and self-directed futures.
