Established in 2024, Buckeye Ridge Rescue and Retreat is a 100-acre property in Millersport, Ohio. It is built upon the philosophy of reciprocal rehabilitation, explored through the foundational concept of 'who rescued who?'
As Founder Dena Scott envisioned, our organization serves as a synergistic healing environment where the recovery of rescued animals and the developmental growth of human participants are inextricably linked.
Our facility utilizes a 'circular philanthropy' model to ensure the long-term viability of the mission. Through The Pines at Buckeye Ridge, the hospitality-based guest house, we generate internal revenue that is reinvested exclusively into our non-profit initiatives. This structure allows us to convert community tourism into a permanent engine for social impact, providing a stable foundation for the individuals and families we serve.
We are currently developing therapeutic programming for veterans, people with disabilities, and at-risk youth. These initiatives are being expertly designed through a collaborative effort involving a Recreation Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, the Barn Manager, and Ms. Scott. Every program that is written is offered to its participants at little to no cost.
We believe that nature is the ultimate classroom and that rescue animals are the most effective teachers. Our outdoor therapeutic curriculum takes participants out of clinical settings and onto our 100-acre property. This sanctuary includes a barn, 16 rescue animals, a dedicated event space, four stock ponds, and a stabilized trail system. These unique environments are meticulously designed to foster the emotional regulation and peace that our underserved populations desperately need. Some of the most powerful lessons, however, come from the animals themselves.
By working alongside our rehabilitated rescue animals, our participants see a reflection of their own potential. They see creatures that were once abandoned or hurting now standing tall, trusted, and loved. Through this bond, they learn the most vital lesson of all: Nothing is hopeless, and second chances are real.
