HEARTS OUT ANIMAL SHELTER INC

Aloha. My name is Lolita Markus and I am a 72 year old Veteran’s widow living in Waipahu, HI. I have been rescuing animals on my own, using my own budget for the past 10 years. I have done it all while being single and working full-time as a truck driver here in Hawaii. In 2017 I quit my job and continued to rescue and care for animals in need. In 2024 I was finally able to establish Hearts Out Animal Shelter, Inc. as an official 501c3 organization. The volunteers and I are currently caring for 49 neglected dogs and 15 neglected cats.

Our project, “Expanding Compassion: Enhancing Resources for Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation,” aims to address the pressing need for more comprehensive care for the animals we serve. We regularly encounter animals requiring urgent medical attention, preventive care, proper nutrition, and a safe and loving environment. Grant funding will enable us to improve our facilities, enhance medical care, and increase our capacity to rescue and rehabilitate more animals.

Our project objectives include:

1. Improving housing and shelter facilities to accommodate and provide sanctuary for an increased number of animals.
2. Enhancing veterinary care services by securing essential medical supplies and involving additional veterinary staff.
3. Implementing a comprehensive nutrition program to ensure balanced and adequate diets for all animals.
4. Launching an awareness campaign to promote the humane treatment of animals and increase community involvement and support.

Methodology:

- Facility Improvement: Utilize grant funding to renovate and expand shelter spaces to house more animals comfortably.

- Veterinary Care Enhancement: Purchase necessary medical equipment and hire additional veterinary staff to provide timely and effective medical interventions.

- Nutrition Program: Establish partnerships with local suppliers for discounted or donated high-quality animal food to ensure all animals receive proper nutrition.

- Awareness Campaign: Develop educational materials and host community events to raise awareness about animal welfare and encourage volunteerism and donations.

Evaluation:

We will measure the success of this project through:
- Increased number of animals rescued and rehabilitated.
- Improved health outcomes for animals receiving veterinary care.
- Enhanced community engagement and support through volunteer and donation increases.
