UCLA's Vice Provost's Initiative for Pre-College Scholars

, THE UCLA FOUNDATION

To provide support for UCLA's Vice Provost's Initiative for Pre-College Scholars (VIP Scholars). UCLA’s VIP Scholars Program is a partnership between UCLA and schools and community organizations in Los Angeles County that prepares historically underrepresented students, specifically African American students, to become competitively eligible for admission to UCLA and other flagship universities, and to encourage pursuit of graduate and professional education, using a social justice framework and holistic approach.

Approximately 80 rising eleventh and twelfth grade high school students are selected as VIP Scholars to receive educational programming presented through a social justice framework at no cost to the students or their families. From the beginning of their sophomore year through high school graduation VIP Scholars participate in the following enrichment activities:

• College preparation workshops focused on topics such as financial aid
• One-on-one meeting with UC admissions officers
• Mentoring sessions with current UCLA undergraduate students
• College-level intensive writing and math courses
• Individualized assistance with the UC application and personal statement
• Residential summer program experience

Additionally, VIP Scholars accepted to UCLA are entitled to a four-year, $20,000 scholarship once they enroll at the university. Additionally, all programming and initiatives are informed by the reflexive relationship between data collection, analysis and informed practice.
