The Coyote

, INDEPENDENT ARTS & MEDIA

The Coyote is an immersive textile installation featuring ongoing community engagement.
Imagine a large storefront space where the walls are covered in the golden hills of California, with my giant bird tapestries hanging high like billboards. As viewers walk through this environment of color and texture, they hear birds squawking and see a black ceramic lantern centered in the room. Then—BAM!—the lights go out. The Coyote arrives. Fog machines fill the space, and amidst the mist, the lantern illuminates while a projection of a coyote sneaks through the fog. The coyote howls, creating a sense of tension, prickling the back of your neck. Then, everything calms: the light returns, birds chirp. Things are different but the same, subtly altered. The change is within you, the viewer.
Since this project explores themes of home, community, and belonging, I invite the community to help create the landscape. Hanging fabric will span ceiling to floor, and I will hold regular open hours to host latch-hook and rug-tufting sessions, collaboratively crafting the California hills.
My project has two primary goals: first, fostering public benefit through community participation in creating the landscape tapestry; and second, presenting the completed installation.
