Shruti Abhishek Dance aims at creating a ‘path’ for Indian immigrant dancers like founder Shruti Abhishek whose art form is culture-specific.
The traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire, comprises seven different pieces. In each piece, the dancer is challenged to experiment with and exhibit their varied skills such as technique, expressions, moods, movements, stamina, and grace.
The purpose of curating Shruti Abhishek Dance came from a place of much need to have a sense of belonging in a new country with your art; to nurture art by an immigrant woman like me by helping them navigate the process-related challenges of ‘starting from zero’.
Shruti Abhishek Dance’s goal is to create a community for these dancers where they feel empowered and enabled to present their craft to a much more diverse audience in the San Francisco area than to only members of their own background in their home country.
This is going to be the first time that an independent organization will create space specifically for immigrant artists. One of Shruti Abhishek Dance’s anticipated outcomes would be to continue as an annual festival that gives opportunities to immigrant women artists from various cultures in the Bay Area. Shruti Abhishek Dance’s long-term future aspiration is that the baton would be passed to other immigrant artists who will organize Shruti Abhishek Dance for the future generation of artists who come to the United States thereby creating a thriving and vibrant immigrant-driven art scene in this country, full of new ideas and rich diversity.
