Breaking The Chains International was founded in February 2022 during the height of the war in Ukraine as a global animal welfare and humanitarian aid organisation. The organisation is committed to delivering vital food, veterinary supplies, and humanitarian aid to animals and communities in crisis; supporting under-resourced shelters, independent rescuers, and stray animal populations; and sharing raw, unfiltered stories from the ground to raise global awareness and drive meaningful support.
Where We've Been:
- In Ukraine, we operated extensively along active frontlines, rescuing injured and abandoned animals from bombed-out buildings and devastated villages. We established our own shelter and veterinary clinic, where we treated hundreds of animals and supported their recovery until they were adopted into loving homes.
- Our outreach programs included feeding and treating stray animal populations, providing parasite prevention and spay/neuter services, and supporting struggling shelters and independent rescuers with food, supplies, and medical care. We also launched a unique Veteran’s Rehabilitation Program, offering animal-assisted therapy and holistic support for wounded Ukrainian soldiers recovering from physical and emotional trauma.
- After the 2023 earthquakes in Turkey, we arrived within 48 hours to assist in the rescue of trapped survivors. Once human rescue operations were complete, we shifted focus to saving over 150 stranded animals, many of whom we later reunited with their families.
- In 2024, as the crisis in Gaza escalated, we became the first non-local animal welfare organisation to operate on the ground. We established a veterinary clinic and a medical checkpoint for working animals, providing critical treatment for injured and malnourished horses and donkeys. We also supported the local zoo by supplying essential food and medicine to help care for the animals during the deepening humanitarian crisis.
