Wild Wynoochee

, SHUNPIKE

Our mission is to create and widely present an engaging, thought-provoking musical inspired by the life of Washington's “hermit outlaw” John Tornow. With this musical, a celebration of state history and culture, we will entertain and enlighten audiences, provide jobs for local talent and generally increase interest in live theater.

Our musical WILD MAN OF THE WYNOOCHEE is inspired by true events surrounding the real life “Wild Man" (Tornow). In 1912, nature-loving hermit Tornow became subject of the longest manhunt in state history – wanted for the murders of six men, including (allegedly) his twin nephews. His greatest crime, though, was being different - a man more at home in the wilderness than civilization. To this day, Tornow remains a controversial character who is a villain to some and folk hero to others.

Though it has been more than 100 years since Tornow roamed the evergreens of the Olympic Peninsula, he represents themes that are both timeless and topical. His story is especially relevant in light of ongoing national conversations surrounding gun violence, discrimination based on differences, fake news, environmental protection and more. Our hope is that through this musical, we can create a powerful work of art that sparks meaningful dialogue and inspires positive change.
