Our mission is to cultivate universal empathy for individuals, communities, and the planet through book arts. Editions is a community workspace where book artists, bookbinders, letterpress printers, printmakers, and writers can find the community and equipment they need to practice their craft. We have residency programs and host numerous workshops teaching people about letterpress printing, printmaking, bookbinding, paper marbling, and just about anything else related to books and paper. We hope to give people a voice and a platform for their stories to be heard.
Our core values are Permission to Play, Care for Our World, and Tell Your Stories Here. We live our values by being collaborative, accessible, sustainable, playful. This is what guides our monthly community outreach, the poems we publish, the rates we charge for workshops, and the rates we pay our instructors.
To cultivate a truly open community, we appreciate cultural traditions while recognizing the harm of ignorance. The patriarchal societies out of which ours was born are dying, and we celebrate this. If our community is to flourish, it must be free of bigotry, racism, ableism, transphobia, sexism, and prejudice of any sort.
Sensitivity is encouraged in how we treat each other as well as our tools. We strive to equip everyone with the knowledge of proper tool usage so that our space will continue to be as welcoming as possible to everyone who joins us.
And finally, our community isn’t worth having if we can’t have fun! Appreciating how playfulness gets expressed is important to keep in mind—we celebrate the unique vision of each artist. The only conformity we promote is respectful use of the communal space and equipment! Your vision should be honored if it is kind and calls you to share it.
