The Seattle Griot Project

, SHUNPIKE

The Seattle Griot Project (SGP) is an archive of the Seattle Central Area Black Community's historical information, and it is focused upon those citizens living within King County. SGP website serves as an online archive that's available to any user to access content quickly and easily such as community oral and written histories, giving them the ability to easily explore the identities of King County's Black American citizens. Also, within the SGP marketing strategy is an exhibit of banners and a video kiosk presentation summarizing the legacy left by the community's Black elders. This exhibit will be developed as a “Roving Museum Exhibit” aimed at presenting oral stories to stimulate inquiry into the SGP, its resources and data. The process is that Technicians and Interns alike will gather the content to be cataloged, transcribed and cross-referenced by relevance. This effort will result in a comprehensive chronicle which will be freely available for all King County inhabitants as well as visitors and the general public offering them information to raise their awareness and understanding of the Black community.

The Seattle Griot Project producers seek out those who are motivated “to do” within the Black Community such as the businesspeople, ministers, educators, the civil servants, the activist, artist and performers and so on. Many of them have been in their field for the greater part of their lives and will most likely be retired from the workforce.
