Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a goal-directed intervention in which our dogs are an integral part of the cognitive, intellectual and physical treatment process. AAT promotes improvement in physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning in the population we serve.
Our programs are as follows:
Just for Kids
Literacy, Reading and Life Skills (ages 5-17). This program supports at-risk, Title 1 students with severe disabilities and/or students who struggle with literacy. Using our assistance dogs Power Paws engages students in their day-to-day classroom activities.
Summer Camp (ages 10-12). Students bring their dogs to a two-week summer camp. Kids learn basic canine obedience skills and are empowered to improve unwanted behaviors. In summer, children learn how assistance dogs support people with disabilities. Interactive classroom activities give children the basics needed to train assistance dogs.
Specialized Training Programs
Empowering Intrepid Warriors. Our country has experienced a decade of war and veterans who require special care to integrate back into their civilian life. Using the healing powers of dogs, we offer a safe, intervention that helps provide highly skilled assistance dogs to veteran affected by the challenge of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Our program activities reintegrate veterans back into their normal lives. Activities create a sense of accomplishment and encouraging veterans to give back to their community.
Diabetic Alert. Dogs help children and adults manage their care by identifying and alerting patients of dangerous glucose levels. Our diabetic alert dogs are trained specifically to identify and alert Type I Diabetic patients of high and low glucose levels. Each dog plays a critical living saving role for their human partners in their care and management of diabetes.
Courthouse/Facility Dogs. Courthouse dogs help victims of abuse (primarily children) as they undergo forensic interviews and exams. These dogs assist defendants in a court setting participant to tell their story and aid in their recovery. Our dogs visit children in detention facilities while lifting the spirits of courthouse staff who often conduct business in adversarial conditions.
