AMERICAN LIVES THEATRE INC

American Lives Theatre (ALT) is a live, professional theatre company located in downtown Indianapolis. We produce five full length plays each season, each one an Indianapolis premiere, and each one employing all local actors, designers, and staff.

In addition to being an arts organization, we are also a community organization. We work with Theatre for Veterans, producing staged readings of veteran playwrights' plays for free. We also conduct quarterly playwriting workshops for anyone in recovery, each session staffing a professional playwright and substance use therapist to ease the process.

We curate public discussions with subject matter experts on topics related to the plays we produce. Recent examples include low Indiana voter turnout, opioids in Indianapolis, and undocumented youth in central Indiana.

We are the only theatre company in residence at both Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre and IF Theatre. We participate in the Fringe Festival, Penrod Art Fair, IndyPride, Irvington Halloween Festival, and Feast of Lanterns. And our company leadership regularly offers guests instruction at colleges and universities.

In our 5+ years, we have produced 17 full length productions, 3 Short Play Festivals, and employed over 500 local artists. Broadway World voted us Best Local Theatre Company in 2024, and we were named Best New Theatre Troupe after our first season by Indianapolis Monthly.
