On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and, in doing so, eliminated federal abortion protections that existed for nearly 50 years. Roe prohibited states from outlawing abortion before viability, around 24 weeks into pregnancy, and after that time in cases when the pregnant person’s life or health was in danger. The Guttmacher Institute, a research firm that tracks abortion policy and supports reproductive rights, has estimated that 27 states are likely to ban abortion once Roe is gone. Such restrictions will force those seeking an abortion to travel across state lines to receive care. We view the right to abortion as a fundamental human right, essential for equality, health, and dignity. Restrictions on abortion access and funding are discriminatory, and these restrictions especially burden low-income patients. We oppose all efforts to restrict abortion rights and are committed to fighting for access to abortion.
