Since the opening of the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in 2006, we have raised and collected funds to purchase holiday wreaths/boughs to honor our fallen veterans resting there each December.
In 2006, about a dozen volunteers got together, purchased 300 wreaths, and held a ceremony. The following year, the cemetery had grown to housing 1,300 veterans. As the need for wreaths became more and more each year, the fundraising efforts also grew. We reached out to friends, family, co-workers, and the media and started to spread the word and host fundraisers.
I can proudly say, with the support of individuals and companies, near and far, we have reached our goal of 100% coverage of the cemetery since the start in 2006. We are one of a handful of national cemeteries able to achieve that.
Now in 2024, the estimated need to honor all of the fallen veterans resting at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery is 35,000 boughs. Each bough will cost $8 and no amount is too small.
The wreath-laying event for 2024 is scheduled for Saturday, December 14th. The laying will start promptly at 7:30 AM (rain or shine). We invite and welcome the public to attend and help us honor those that gave it all.
