Center for Amazon Community Ecology

Lemoyne, Pennsylvania

CACE promotes forest conservation and community development in the Amazon rainforest by helping local people to develop and market value-added non-timber forest products as sustainable alternatives to economic activities that damage the forest. Our main partners are 16 native and mestizo communities in the northern Peruvian Amazon where we work with over 200 artisans and woodsmen to develop high-quality hand-made crafts and novel essential oils. CACE works closely with our community partners to sustainably harvest the palm fibers, natural dyes, resin, and leaves from trees in the forest and fallow fields. We then organize workshops with veteran artisans from the communities so others can learn how to make innovative crafts including snake pattern belts, guitar straps, hot pads, bags, and Christmas tree ornaments. Craft sales create sustainable livelihoods for artisan families and CACE re-invests 20% of net sales to support health, education and conservation needs in partner communities.
