1.2 million South Carolinians experience a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or stroke each year. More than 209,000 of those individuals are left with disabilities. These numbers do not include those disabled as a result of hypoxic injuries that can result from strangulation, drug overdose, or heart attack; nor does it include other conditions like tumors or infectious disease that affect the brain. The symptoms of brain injuries (BI) are life-changing and not only impact the BI survivor but their entire family. Many people living with BI do not qualify for state supported services.
The Brain Injury Association of SC (BIASC) has been helping individuals with brain injuries, their families, caregivers, and professionals in SC since 1998. BIASC helps BI survivors, and their families, navigate a complicated healthcare system and leads them to resources that meet their needs. This enables the BI survivor to have access to services which will ultimately help them have a better quality of life.
BIASC is the voice of the brain injury community. We represent the BI community on committees with state agencies who serve individuals with brain injuries including SC Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (SCDDSN), SC Dept. of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), SC Vocational Rehabilitation Dept. (SCVRD), SC Dept. of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS), and SC Office on Aging. We also collaborate with other advocacy groups, SC Developmental Disabilities Council, Independent Living Centers, SC Spinal Cord Injury Association, ARC of SC, and more.
