ProduceGood is a nonprofit that engages in community gleaning practices to recover unwanted or wasted produce to serve individuals who are hungry and to reduce organic waste in landfill. We were founded in 2014 by three San Diego women looking to make a difference through the power of community.
Problem and Our Solution
The SD Hunger Coalition reports that, due to Covid, today in SD County 1 in 3 individuals are food insecure, which includes children, adults, seniors, homeless, veterans and others. Yet it is a fact that 40% of fresh produce rots, goes to waste or gets plowed under each year. To recover this nutritious food, ProduceGood utilizes volunteers of all ages, abilities and beliefs to glean (pick or pick up) fresh fruit and vegetables in backyards, farmers markets and farms and immediately transport it to a nearby member of our network of more than 40 local l organizations that feed people in need. In the first 11 months of 2021 we executed 492 gleaning events, recovering more than 244,000 pounds or 732,000 servings for hungry San Diegans.
