HFSOCO provides veterans from Southern Colorado, defined as the Tellar/El Paso county line South to the New Mexico border, East to the Kansas border and the Western Slope, an all expense paid journey to Washington D.C. to see the war and service memorials built to honor the service of these veterans.
This all expense paid trip for veterans provides an opportunity that otherwise may not be available. The veterans are treated like VIPs the entire way, from a pre-flight lunch were they receive information on the trip and clothing to identify them as an Honor Flight veteran, to a world class welcome home ceremony no effort is spared to ensure each and every veteran is treated with dignity, respect, and in some cases receive long over due recognition for the sacrifices and hardships these individuals endured.
During the trip, HFSOCO visits the WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial (The Wall), the Marine Corps War Memorial, the Navy Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, and witness The Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington National Cemetery. This is an experience unlike any other, veterans who have been to the memorials previously often comment on how different the experience was traveling with Honor Flight and their fellow veterans.
While our mission is to honor these veterans, there are many other things that occur. For many a weight is lift, wounds are healed, long unrecognized feelings come to the surface and lives are changed. More than one veteran has commented on the experience as the best trip of their life.
Included in the all expense paid experience is transportation, lodging, food, clothing (t-shirts and jacket), medical support staff, wheel chairs for those veterans with mobility concerns, and a photographer to capture the moments to be remembered. The cost to send a veteran is $1200. Guardians who go to escort veterans and do the heavy lifting of luggage, wheel chairs, and luggage pay their own way.
