The essence of Miracles’ approach is integrating horses with therapy to improve the lives of those facing challenges. Adaptive Riding, our primary program, teaches children and adults with special needs to learn how to ride a horse to the best of their ability. Parents and caregivers often notice positive changes in demeanor, language skills, strength, and flexibility when kids interact with our therapy horses, other students, and volunteers. We also serve as an outpatient clinic for ChildServe and the University of Iowa Center for Disabilities and Development for physical, occupational, and speech therapists who bring their clients (as young as two years old) to Miracles to conduct a therapy session on the back of a horse. Our veteran’s program, MVECS (Military Veterans Equine Care Squad) is run by and for veterans and their families to connect with our horses and each other.
Children and adults with special needs often have limited opportunities to fully participate in recreational and physical activities. By offering adaptive riding classes, we are able to provide an opportunity to learn to ride a horse to the best of their ability. The benefits go far beyond just learning how to ride. The motion of the horse and movements on top of the horse help foster balance, flexibility and strength. Interaction with other students, volunteers and the instructor aid in communication and social skills. And who doesn’t benefit from the sensory inputs and calm that being outdoors can foster.
