The Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center (VWHRC) head office is in Little River, South Carolina and was established in 2009. Its mission is to end homelessness by supporting those who support US.
In furtherance of its mission, VWHRC provides supportive services to honorably discharged Veterans, including temporary financial aid, job placement assistance, Veterans Administration claims assistance, assistance with achieving financial stability, and assistance achieving food security. It also offers temporary shelter to honorably discharged Veterans until they can secure long-term housing. Its most recent project involves building a tiny home village in Myrtle Beach for forty homeless Veterans. Lastly, it provides rental subsidy assistance to those low-income Veterans who do not have sufficient revenue to afford affordable housing. Until recently, this was done through private donations.
It is a non-profit created under South Carolina law and is in good standing with South Carolina. It has also received a determination of tax-exempt status under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
In 2009, VWHRC started in a rented house with limited resources. By 2014, VWHRC bought a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath house that was converted into office space for the volunteers and a temporary shelter for homeless Veterans, with the temporary shelter being known as the Hutton House. In 2017, VWHRC bought a 40’ shipping container and converted into a “mini house.” VWHRC uses this container, now known as the Rotary House, in conjunction with the Hutton House to provide safe stable temporary housing to Veterans. With the financial support of the community and corporate partners, as well as over forty-eight (48) volunteers, VWHRC has been able to provide these services.
VWHRC is working to complete a Tiny Home Village in Myrtle Beach. It is finishing 25 homes and will then move to phase 2, which includes building 26 duplexes along with a main resource center. The center allows the Veterans and their families to cook, clean and socialize together. The goal is to create a community that supports one another and provides supportive services to those deserving Veterans so they can return to a life with safe housing and income from meaningful and productive work.
