As the first organization to represent our LGBTQ+ community in the fight against discrimination in military service, AVER is dedicated to equity and inclusion for all current and former members of the United States Armed Forces and our families. We work to secure equal access to benefits, respectful and complete medical care from the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, and uniform standards that honor the diversity of service members and fully support the mission of the U.S. military. We envision a military that reflects the diversity of the American people where all service members are free to reach their full potential unburdened by policies that discriminate against anyone. The guardians of our nation’s liberty must be first and foremost the representatives of the freedom they serve to defend.
AVER is a Veterans Service Organization for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender service members and veterans. We work with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop services that help LGBTQ+ veterans heal from the trauma of serving under unjust policies that forced many men and women in uniform to hide who they were and who they loved in order to serve the country they loved.
