NATIONAL WOMANS RELIEF CORPS AUXILIARY TO THE GRAND ARMY OF THE

Murphysboro, Illinois

Our mission is to perpetuate the memory of those who sacrificed much and sometimes all in the American Civil War; provide assistance to veterans of all wars and extend needed aid to them and to their widow(er)s and orphans. We believe it is our duty to cherish and emulate all those who rendered loving service to our country. We strive to inculcate lessons of patriotism and love of our country among the children and in our communities, and encourage the spread of universal liberty and equal rights of everyone.

The National Woman’s Relief Corps (WRC) is a 501c3. It was chartered July 25 and 26, 1883 as auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, Inc (GAR) and Congressionally chartered on September 7, 1962. Our earliest members include Clara Barton, Susie King Taylor, Susan B. Anthony, Dr. Anna Shaw, Harriet Tubman, Louisa May Alcott, and many other famous women of American History. The women who began the science of nursing are the women who populated our earliest Corps. Today we strive to assist veterans, nurture patriotism, uphold the tenet of spreading universal liberty and equal rights of everyone. We perform volunteer work and provide scholarships as well as maintain a museum of artifacts.
