The National Military Intelligence Foundation (NMIF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to sustaining an intelligence workforce that ensures the national security of the United States. With a legacy dating to 1974, the Foundation recognizes intelligence professionals’ accomplishments, awards scholarships to aspiring intelligence practitioners, and promotes professional development. NMIF depends entirely on donations and institutional grants to accomplish its good works.
Awards. NMIF recognizes 18 exemplary intelligence professionals each year for their noteworthy contributions to national security. Awardees are selected by their military service or IC agency leadership and consist of civilian government employees and members of the armed forces assigned to active, reserve, and National Guard components.
Scholarships. NMIF is dedicated to assisting promising undergraduate and graduate students studying in the intelligence, cyber, and national security-related fields. In 2022, NMIF selected 11 recipients to receive $25,000 worth of academic scholarships. The competition for awards is intense, with students from more than 45 universities regularly submitting applications for consideration.
Professional Development. NMIF promotes intelligence tradecraft, fosters service in the IC, and advocates appreciation of its heritage. The Foundation publishes two editions of its acclaimed American Intelligence Journal annually and conducts a range of activities that include outreach to colleges and universities, book talks, symposia, and intelligence panels.
Recognizing Excellence and Potential. Each year, NMIF hosts a formal gala to recognize its award winners and scholarship recipients. More than 300 participants, including corporate sponsors and senior intelligence officers from across the military services and IC agencies, typically attend this black-tie event. In 2020 and 2021, NMIF partnered with the International Spy Museum to conduct an online, virtual celebration due to the ongoing pandemic.
NMIF has just one part-time, paid staff member. Volunteers who spent many years as military intelligence or national security professionals perform most of the Foundation’s work because they are dedicated to giving back to the intelligence profession.
