The Street Outreach program at the New London Homeless Hospitality Center is designed to meet people where they are—literally—by engaging with individuals living outside in cars, camps, or other places not meant for human habitation. Outreach staff build trust through consistent presence and compassionate conversation, offering food, supplies, and immediate problem-solving while working to connect people with shelter, medical care, and housing resources. The program prioritizes relationship-building, recognizing that many unsheltered individuals face deep barriers to accessing traditional services, such as trauma, mental health challenges, or distrust of institutions. By maintaining strong partnerships with local law enforcement, healthcare providers, and social service agencies, Street Outreach serves as a lifeline, bridging the gap between isolation and support. Ultimately, the program’s operations focus on creating pathways out of homelessness by ensuring that even the most vulnerable are not left unseen or unsupported.
The Street Outreach program employs two full-time staff, who are the only street outreach people in all of Southeastern Connecticut. Private Foundation and Individual support is sought to pay staff salaries and pay for vehicles and upkeep of the vehicles.
