LAKE PLACID, FloridaOur mission is to end generational poverty and transform distressed neighborhoods in Highway Park and certain census tracts in Highlands County, into thriving, healthy, sustainable communities - good places to live, work, play, do business and raise families. Vision: We envision a community where families feel connected to each other and where youth are encouraged to grow and prosper. Our mission is accomplished through community revitalization projects including beautification/rehabilitation projects, job development, job training, job support, workshops, business incubator at Village Green Resource Center, arts, cultural projects, humanities programs, exhibits, festivals, food distribution support, community teaching garden, health programs, Wele Youth Leadership, senior citizen programs, veterans and affordable housing support. These activities are designed to provide economic empowerment in marginalized communities in Highlands County. Several projects demonstrate this commitment: Economic Empowerment: a) As certified packagers with the US Department of Agriculture's 502 Direct Mortgage program, we help low to very low-income, first-time home buyers prequalify to buy a home of their own. b) The Village Green Community Resource Center serves as a business incubator for new and emerging entrepreneurs. We provide job training, free computer access, financial literacy classes, GED classes (in collaboration with South Florida State College), veterans agricultural courses (in collaboration with North South Institute), Wele Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurial program, and business support. Community Revitalization: a) Grow Community Teaching and Demonstration Garden b) US Hwy 27 S Veterans Memorial c) Historic Highway Park Cemetery enhancements d) Annual Great American Clean Ups (as an award-winning affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Florida Beautiful) e) Collaboration with Highlands County Code Enforcement to eradicate dilapidated structures and unsafe housing f) MLK Jr. Sports Field enhancements Arts/Culture: a) Annual Founders Day Celebration b) Quarterly Arts and cultural programming Community Health: a) Free Health Screenings b) One Step for Life Health improvement program
TYPE OF CHARITY: 501c3 & Category: S20 (Community, Neighborhood Development, Improvement); C50 (Environmental Beautification); W99 (Public, Society Benefit - Multipurpose and Other N.E.C.). Based on current By-Laws, all Board members give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other benefits. Board is responsible for the fiduciary and programmatic strength of the agency.
