DFSA opened its doors in 2003, after being chosen by Austin leaders to uplift low-income women in Central Texas. Over the past 19 years, over 17,000 women have participated in education & workforce development programs that assisted them in entering the workforce & finding upward mobility for themselves & their families.
The 2017 Status Report on Women & Children in Central Texas (Austin Community Foundation), stated that 20% of Austin's single mothers were living in poverty compared to 10% of the general population. That same year, 63% of the DFSA clients were mothers (83% of those being head-of-household), 36% had experienced domestic violence, 20% had been incarcerated, and 20% did not have a high school degree.
Annually, DFSA serves 1,000 low income women from 7 area counties with professional suiting, educational programs, and career services that help move these mothers & children out of poverty into economic stability. All inventory is donated by the community & programming is led by 300 trained volunteers.
