Jamaica Bay Shoreline Cleanup

Help protect one of the nation’s most important urban estuaries and New York City’s largest open space! Jamaica Bay is an unparalleled oasis of nature covering 44 square miles of open water, tidal wetlands, and coastal parklands altogether twice the size of Manhattan that is home to hundreds of species of birds, fish, and other wildlife. Jamaica Bay also offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation; diverse ecosystems for unique learning experiences and field studies; and serves as a natural buffer against flooding and storm surge.
During this volunteer stewardship event hosted by Jamaica Bay-Rockway Parks Conservancy, you’ll work as a team to remove debris from the shoreline – from large marine waste that damages salt marshes to plastics that break down into dangerous microplastics, threatening marine life and birds.
We’ll make it fun with a friendly competition: prizes for the most poundage collected and the most unusual find of the day. Along the way, you’ll learn about Jamaica Bay’s ecology, its surrounding communities, and how your efforts support local resilience and habitat protection.
We’ll provide supplies, guidance, and plenty of encouragement. You’ll bring your energy, curiosity, and team spirit! Join us and make a difference for New York City’s environment.

As a unique public-private partnership that works across city, state and federal agencies, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) was established in 2013 to bring together diverse community stakeholders, elected officials, academic researchers and others toward a common goal: improving public parklands for enjoyment and ecosystem health.
