Community Inclusion Club Transportation Initiative

来自 COMMUNITY INCLUSION CLUB

Community Inclusion Club now has 206 members. We hold activities in and around the Iowa City area one to two times per month and transportation is a barrier that makes it difficult for some of our club's members to attend our events. Most of our members are adults with intellectual disabilities and do not have drivers licenses nor do they drive. Several of our events are held in locations that are not accessible by public transit and paying for other modes of transit is cost prohibitive since most of our clubs members are on fixed incomes. We currently have an old wheelchair van that only has seating for one wheelchair and one other passenger. Our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase a 12 passenger van so that we can begin transporting club members to and from our events more safely and efficiently. Currently, Community Inclusion Club has four Unified Sports Basketball teams and there are 42 participants. All of our coaches and board members, as well as the director of our club are volunteers and we rely on donations to pay for our operating expenses. We do not own a building, and the majority of the funds we receive go directly to support our clubs members. We do carry a liability insurance policy and we have insurance on our wheel chair van. The club also has a membership to Zoom and we pay a monthly fee for our website hosting. Community Inclusion Club was created to provide socially inclusive community based activities for adults with and without intellectual disabilities in Iowa City, although we do provide programming for people in surrounding communities. Our membership numbers have grown 25% each year and some of our events have had up to 160 people in attendance.
